What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?
AAC refers to the use of symbol systems other than speech to communicate. Nearly anyone can use AAC, from children who have never developed verbal/vocal communication skills, to adults with neuromuscular disorders causing low intelligibility. AAC is a wide and varied field, and can range from simple sign languages, to picture exchange, such as PECS to speech generating devices, such as LAMP, or proloquo.
